Repossession: Reign over inferno
21/06/10 || Wooderson
Now before we get into what this mother sounds like, I do have to bring up something on their promotional poster for “Reign Over Inferno” which actually made me say “What the fuck”. In nice bold lettering it states “Emotions Are Guaranteed!!!!” with, count ‘em, 4 exclamation points. Thank hell emotions are guaranteed because if I slipped into a coma, I’d want my cash back. Anyways, enough bitching about something minor like this…onto the review.
Ya know how a lot of bands nowadays have that slick sounding production? Well, that’s not a problem here. This is some grimy, filthy sounding death metal which suits me just fine as this style is exactly what I’ve been digging lately. It’s not overly technical which is cool because that would just take away from their sound. This 6 pack is loaded with tremolo riffs, pummeling double bass and an overall dirty sound that should please anyone who enjoys some old school Swedish type groove in their metal.
Sounds great, right?
Well, it’s not all good times here as there is an element present that annoys me and it’s not just that promo poster. The lead guitar which is responsible for providing the majority of the melodic side of the band is average at best. Remember when you first picked up a guitar and figured out how to do the tap/hammer-on/pull off technique and you thought you were the next Randy Rhodes or Eddie Van Halen? These guys have a long way to go before they reach that level yet the album is flooded with their shitty tapping technique. It sounds sloppy and for some strange reason, dated and not in a good way. If they gave up on this I swear the overall score would go up a notch or two.
Other than the annoying guitar tapping leads, it’s really not a bad slab of metal. Opening track “Let’s Fuckin’ Die” kicks things off with them old school riffs and crushes it’s way through with some thunderous double bass. They even throw in some fine USDM riffage at the halfway point of the song to change things up and finish off in style as the closing riff is a fucking keeper. It just reeks of classic Swedish death.
The vocal performance is fairly good too. The singer has a good mid-range sounding guttural delivery that’s laced on occasion with the some high rasps. Again, very old school in sound but this is a plus here.
Overall, this is fairly decent attempt and I kinda get the impression, they really don’t give a shit what other people think. But please, take my advice guys, the leads are decent but that tapping needs to just fucking go as it’s just horrible.
